The Central American migrants moving their way through Mexico Tuesday as part of a controversial caravan — one President Donald Trump is pushing hard as a midterms election issue — is forging ahead in its long journey to the U.S.-Mexico border.
The first waves of migrants — who U.N. officials estimate may be as high as 7,200 and growing — began arriving late Monday to the small southern Mexican town of Huixtla after an exhausting eight-hour trek.
Many staked out grassy spots in the town square to sleep outdoors overnight before continuing their grueling trip north on Tuesday.
They were at least 1,100 miles from McAllen, Texas, the nearest U.S.-Mexico border entry

Two elephants were killed and another critically injured on Sunday (Oct 21) crossing railway tracks in Sri Lanka, officials said, in yet another tragic collision involving the protected animals and speeding trains.
A Jaffna-bound night train rammed into two elephants at Ambanpola, 150km north of Colombo, killing one and injuring the other.
In a separate accident, a passenger train derailed after hitting and killing an elephant near Palugaswewa, 160 kmnorth-east of Colombo.
No passengers were injured in either accident.
“Train services have been disrupted, but we are working to remove the carcass and repair the track on the eastern line,” an official said by telephone.
Speed restrictions are imposed on trains passing through elephant habitats but these are difficult to enforce. Only 10 per cent of Sri Lanka’s trains are believed to be equipped with speedometers, local media reported Sunday.
Two weeks ago, a passenger train struck and killed three elephants. A fortnight before that, a mother elephant and her two calves were hit and killed in the east of the country.
Sri Lanka considers elephants a national treasure and they are protected by law.

එමෙන්ම පනතට අනුව නීතීපති දෙපාර්තමෙන්තුවේ කාර්යභාරය වන්නේ කොමිසම විසින් කැඳවන සාක්ෂිකරුවන්ගෙන් ප්රශ්න විමසීම වන අතර නීතීපති දෙපාර්තමෙන්තුවට සාක්ෂිකරුවන් කැඳවීමට නෛතික හැකියාවක් නොමැති බවද ඔහු කොමිසමට පැවසුවේය.
කෙසේවෙතත් ඊට ප්රතිචාර දක්වමින් අතිරේක සොලිසිටර් ජෙනරාල් යසන්ත කෝදාගොඩ මහතා කියා සිටියේ නීතීපති දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව කොමිසමට සහය දක්වන්නේ පරීක්ෂණ කොමිසම් පනතේ 23 වන වගන්තියට අනුව වන බවයි.
එම වගන්තිය යටතේ ඕනෑම රාජ්ය සේවකයෙකු කොමිමේ සහයට කැඳවීමේ බලය කොමිසමට ඇති බැවින් නීතීපති දෙපාර්තමෙන්තුව විසින් සාක්ෂිකරුවන් කැඳවීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් ඉන්දතිස්ස මහතාගේ තර්කය නිවැරදි නොවන බව ඔහු කොමිසමට පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.
මේ අතර අර්ජුන් අලෝෂියස් මහතා වෙනුවෙන් කොමිසමේ පෙනී සිටින ජනාධිපති නීතීඥ අනුජ ප්රේමරත්න මහතා කොමිසමෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටියේ සිය සේවාදායකයාගේ දුරකථනය විමර්ශනය කර තාක්ෂණික විශේෂඥයෙකු විසින් කොමිසමට භාරදුන් පිටු 8600 ක වාර්තාව පරිශීලනය කිරීමට තමන්ටද අවස්ථාව ලබාදෙන ලෙසයි.
එහිදී නීතීපති දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව එම ඉල්ලීමට විරෝධය පළකරන බව ජ්යෙෂ්ඨ අතිරේක සොලිසිටර් ජෙනරාල් දප්පුල ද ලිවේරා මහතා ප්රකාශ කළේය.
ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසුවේ අර්ජුන් ඇලෝෂියස් මහතා සිය අයිෆෝන් ගිණුමේ රහස් කේතය ලබාදීමට කටයුතු නොකිරීම නිසා තවමත් විමර්ශන අවසන් කිරීමට නොහැකි වී ඇති බවයි.
මේ අතර පර්පෙචුඅල් ට්රෙෂරීස් සමාගමේ ප්රධාන විධායක නිළධාරී කසුන් පළිසේනට කොමිසම යළි රැස්වන එළඹෙන අඟහරුවාදා දිනයේදී කොමිසම හමුවේ පෙනී සිටින ලෙස කොමිසම අද ඔහුගේ නීතිඥයින්ට දැනුම්දෙන ලදී.
අමෙරිකාවේ ශ්රී ලංකා තානාපති ප්රසාද් කාරියවසම් මහතා නව විදේශ ලේකම්වරයා ලෙස ජනාධිපති විසින් (29) දින පත් කර ඇති බව වාර්තා වෙයි.
මේ අතර හිටපු විදෙස් ලේකම් වන ඇසළ විරකෝන් මහතා සංචාරක ප්රවර්ධන අමාත්යංශයේ ලේකම්වරයා ලෙස පත් කර තිබේ.
වසරකට ආසන්න කාලයක් ඉන්දියාවේ නවදිල්ලි නුවර ශ්රී ලංකා මහකොමසාරිස්වරයා ලෙස කටයුතු කළ ඇසළ වීරකෝන් මහතා මෙරට තානාපති සේවයේ නිරතව සිටින ජ්යේෂ්ඨතම නිලධාරියෙකු වේ.
1988 වසරේදී විදේශ සේවයට එක්ව ඇති ඇසළ වීරකෝන් මහතා මීට පෙර කැනඩාවේ ශ්රී ලංකා මහ කොමසාරිස් ධූරය ඇතුළු විදේශ රටවල් රැසක සේවය කර තිබේ.
